“Now Jericho was shut up from within and without because of the people of Israel; none went out and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, “See I have given into your hand Jericho, with its king and might men of valor. You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus you shall do for six days. And seven priests[Levites] shall bear seven trumpets of rams horns [Shofar] before the Ark, and on the seventh day, you shall march around the city 7 times, the priest blowing the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the walls of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him. (Joshua 6:1-5 RSV)
As I stated before in my previous post; Jericho was a city that would have hindered the control of the Promised Land that God had given Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and all their descendants.
The walls of Jericho had to tumble down, and it was not going to happen by the strength of men alone. Jericho came down because of obedience, submission, trust, -warfare and through praise and worship.
We have walls in each and every one of our lives, walls that we have put out, walls that situations have created, walls that others have placed on us…all meant to keep us from reaching our Promised Land.
God spoke to Joshua and told him that the land of Jericho already belonged to him. BUT there was a specific strategy that had to be followed. Had Joshua moved forward on his own strength and with his own plans he surely would have failed. How many times has God spoken something over our lives, or promised us something and we automatically want to run off and do it; in our own strength and in our own time, and we will surely set ourselves up for failure and we will turn to question God. Maybe God’s plan seemed ridiculous to Joshua and maybe he even doubted, but he was obedient until the end. And that is how we have to be.
We have to be obedient to God in every aspect of our lives. Even when we think we have a better way or we are anxious to do what he has called us to do, we have to be obedient & SUBMIT.
Submission is not easy, it sometimes fights us to our very core and we can be stubborn and not want to lose control. But if we truly TRUST in God and we want to obey God, then we have to submit to Him. We have to be willing to surrender our dreams, our fears, our talents, and even our time frame to God. We have to be willing to believe that what God has promised us will happen, but we have to let Him be in control first.
Our lives are meant to glorify God, through the works he has for each and every one of us; and the talents he has placed within each one of us. But if we move forward and do what we want to do, when we want to do…we risk failure. But more importantly we risk calling unbelief unto the words God has spoken. I believe that God can turn our failures around for His glory but wouldn’t we want to Glorify Him from the beginning by being obedient and submitting to Him. I want my life to be under the covering of God, not believing that I am above it.
Submission is something that I have struggled with in my walk with God. I jumped forward into decisions without really knowing if they were even in the plan He had for my life. I have struggled with handing over all my fears, my dreams, my heart, & my hurts. And frankly, it has gotten me no where. I am left with nothing, broken down standing at the altar, and finally realizing my life will be nothing if I don’t truly give it God first. I will never reach My Promised Land. I WANT to see my dreams come true, I want to find true happiness, I want to fulfill the calling in my life. But none of it is going to be possible if I don’t let God take control first. Submission and Surrender is Key to moving forward.
PRAISE and WORSHIP
God called forth not only the armies, but the priests to march around the city of Jericho. Tearing down the walls in our lives is going to require warfare because it is not only flesh and blood that we come against. And this warfare is not with swords and guns…it is with praise and worship. The only way we will ever conquer the things that are holding us back is if we take our eyes off of them, and place our focus back on God and who He is, what he has done, and what He has said he will do.
Worship is not only something you do within the four walls of the church. It is a way of life. Everything we do, every part of our beings and every part of our lives is meant to glorify God. And when we live that out…we are living out true worship.
I know in my life it is no coincidence that the place God brought me to first encounter Him, and to support me as I go through this life is called Praise Tabernacle. It is in my church that I have truly learned the meaning of praising God through the storm. I have learned what a sacrifice of praise is. I have learned what really happens when I give it all to God through my dance.
This year is meant to be a year of victories, and a year when we finally tear down the walls of ALL that has been holding us back. It is time to take a stand and fight for what we want and what we believe in. It is a time to truly surrender to God, every single part of our lives. It is a time to obey God in all that He asking of us. And it is a time to truly be able to worship in spirit and in truth and live out that worship every day…because that is the only way we will ever win this war.
